Poppy's Books is featured in 50 Fantastic Franchises
by Emma Jones (of Enterprise Nation) and Sarah Clay
Do you want to run your own business?
We are looking for motivated and energetic people who want to run their own business. This exciting opportunity means that you will become part of the fantastic Poppy's Books team.
Poppy’s Books is growing day by day and are looking to expand into new areas. We are looking for enthusiastic people to sell a brilliant range of children’s titles. You have exclusivity in your area and can sell books to friends, at toddler groups, preschools, schools and fundraising events - the sky is your limit. You arrange your own visits or events. Books are supplied in boxes to sell on the day, no taking of orders, no return visits - you can order as many boxes as you like and start making a profit.
Investment Required This is a low cost entry option to running your own business. Boxes of books are £100 with £300 worth of books in it from excellent publishers such as Walker, Random House and Priddy. All books are great quality and easy to sell. We have read every book which goes into your box and will only include titles we know will sell well. Boxes include activity books, board books and picture books as well as multicultural titles which are very popular with groups.
Hours You decide how much you want to work. We suggest that 2 mornings per week as a minimum if you are serious about making a good income. But this is your business so you can sell when, how and where you like - sell books at home, at toddler groups/playgroups or events. You can also leave books at nurseries or businesses. It's easy to fit the work around family life.
Salary/Wage Even if you sell the box of books at half price (which moves them very quickly) you can make 33% profit, achieving £50 per box. However many agents only discount by 25%, achieving £125 per box or 10%, achieving £170, and make even greater margins.
Training Training and support is important to us and is available for all aspects of setting up and running your own business. We want you to gain confidence as you work with us and we are committed to supporting you as you build up your business.
It’s a great opportunity to have your own business and make it into what suits you best.
Another opportunity is for:
Agents to work selling multicultural, social and disability issue books directly to preschool environments.
Agents usually make appointments by phone and arrange a visit to demonstrate books. Visits can last from 20 minutes to an hour and 2 or 3 visits can be made in a morning or an afternoon.
A kit of books is supplied to agents at a cost of £100 or a larger set at £150. Agents will take orders at each visit and these will attract commission. Agents are expected to read the kit books and know all the selling points for the books that they are supplying, so you will need to have a passion for reading and an interest in books.
Agents decide themselves which days they want to work, and where. 2 mornings per week, 3 appointments per morning, could earn you over £200 per week. Training and support are provided.
If you love books and want to work selling a product you can feel passionate about then working for Poppy's Books could be ideal for you!

This month I have asked one of our new agents, VL, to tell everyone her experience of working for Poppy’s Books:-
Having decided to stay at home after the birth of my first child (three years ago), I was keen to find some flexible work which would fit around my family life. I was looking for something which would allow me to work whenever I chose to and more importantly without any pressures or targets. I looked at the mumandworking website and considered several opportunities. Poppy’s Books really appealed to me because:-
a) Unlike its competitors, it operated in a niche market - i.e. providing preschool environments with Multicultural,
Dual Language, Social Issue and Disability type books.
b) As an agent you have exclusivity in your area (i.e. no other Poppy’s Books agents operate in your chosen
area).
I now visit 2 nurseries a week. I usually arrange to meet with Nursery Owners / Managers when my elder daughter is at nursery. My 6 month old son comes with me and is usually having his mid-morning nap when I have the meetings.
So far I am really enjoying being a Poppy’s Books agent and get such an enormous buzz from making a sale. The people I meet are really friendly and the books are not a hard sell at all, in fact they sell themselves.
I feel like my confidence is coming back to me and it’s so nice to have a bit of money coming in!
Poppy’s Books are keen to hear from you if you too are interested.

The books have arrived and they are fabulous thanks! Obviously knew what quality to expect as I researched beforehand, the title choices are great and I look forward to getting started very soon!
Thanks,
Sonja
Books have arrived. They are fab and just what I was looking for. Sandra
I have worked with Poppy’s Books for just over a year now and it is GREAT. I haven't done the multi-cultural books yet but hope to this year. It looks rewarding. I buy the boxes of books and sell them in my own time.
I have 2 young boys and I was looking for something rewarding that I could do in my own time and Poppy’s Books is perfect if you love children’s books.
I buy a box of books that contain a good variety of popular books. You can specify the types of books you need at any time. I take them to nurseries and toddler groups and I also do school fairs and have recently done local town fairs. I have built up a good reputation very quickly as people love the books and prices.
There is no pressure on selling and you can charge what you want for each book.
You can build up your business in your own time and if you have to take time off for your family than it does not matter. It is up to you how you sell and run your business.
The other great advantage is that Poppy’s Books does not overlap agents in an area so you do not have the same people competing in areas. You get your own local selling area.
The lady who runs Poppy’s Books never puts pressure on sales and is more than happy to give ideas and tips on selling because she knows what works (out of experience). She is very friendly and helpful.

I have been really impressed with Pat's personal approach to the business - before I started I had a lovely long chat on the phone to her and she's very helpful in giving ideas etc. As soon as I'd signed up, she'd sent me a link with all the local pre-schools/nurseries I could try to go to so I didn't even have to do that bit of research.
I've been excited about receiving my books (which came 2 days after paying for them) - there's a lovely range and I'm quite tempted to keep some for myself!!!
The thing I like about Poppy's is that you own the stock outright and when people come to you if they see a book they like, they can buy it there and then. Lots of people I've spoken to have said they like the idea of buying straight away - especially if they have a last minute present to buy!
The other thing I like is that there isn't a huge outlay - only £100 minimum and you can make at least £50 on that.

I can thoroughly recommend Poppy's Books for some very concrete sales reasons. Pat Saunders (who is Poppy's Books) provides her agents with an exclusive sales area. Personally I prefer to be talking to the company owner and having one to one contact. For me, this is important when working from home as it can be lonely. As a very experienced and successful sales person, I have to point you in the direction of Poppy's Books.
MR
I've just started with Poppy's books and would very much recommend it. Poppy's is a smaller company than others so you're more likely to get a larger territory, so no clashes when it comes to booking events/visits. The books come from a variety of publishers, selected by Pat (who is really passionate about books), as ones which she knows from experience will sell easily (as well as running the business side, she still sells the books herself, and sends out frequent newsletters with what has worked best for her and other agents).
As well as buying books upfront and selling however and for whatever price you like, you can also take on a commissioned agent role. For this, you become a specialist advisor on diversity/disability/issues books for preschools and nurseries. You buy a set of demonstration books upfront (which you would need to become familiar with so you can advise on the content) and then you earn commission on each book the setting orders. Preschools and nurseries are obliged to stock these types of books, so are very happy to be visited by agents.
Pat is really interested in helping and mentoring her agents, and is always up for a chat, so if you do want to find out more, do give her a call.
